A recent overseas order involved a mixed batch of used injection molds rather than a new injection molding machine. The molds were sourced in China, gathered in one workshop and prepared for export shipment. The photos on this page record the actual batch: different mold sizes, lifting eyes, protective wrapping, wooden supports, steel straps and handwritten handling marks.

Buying a used mold can shorten the route to a proven plastic part and reduce tooling cost. It can also create an expensive mismatch if the buyer receives a mold that will not fit the available injection molding machine, cannot run the intended resin or needs more repair than expected. The useful work happens before the mold is loaded, while its identity, condition and interfaces can still be checked.

Why used injection molds were practical for this order

The buyer was not looking for one custom tool made from a new drawing. This was a group of existing molds for recognizable plastic products, including household items and an electrical enclosure. Product-reference sheets were attached to several packed molds so the tooling could be linked back to the expected molded part.

That distinction matters. A used injection mold is not a generic machine accessory. Its value depends on whether it still produces an acceptable part and whether it can run on the buyer's equipment. A low purchase price is only useful when the mold identity, condition, machine fit and likely repair scope are understood.

Overseas buyers use several search terms for this category. “Used injection molds,” “used plastic injection molds,” “second hand injection moulds” and “pre-owned injection molding tools” usually describe the same purchasing need. In an RFQ, the part drawing and mold information are more important than the spelling of mold or mould.

Recording the mold batch before packing

The workshop photos show multiple blue mold bases grouped together after sourcing. The molds vary in footprint and height, and several have lifting eyes already fitted. Protective film covers the exposed assemblies while product-reference images remain visible on selected units.

For a mixed batch, each mold should have its own controlled identity. A practical record includes the mold number, matching part photo or drawing, cavity count, approximate size and weight, included accessories, and any known maintenance or test history. Those details help prevent a mold, insert or loose component from being separated from the rest of its set.

The photos confirm the physical batch and visible packing condition. They do not, by themselves, prove mold steel grade, cavity count, cooling-circuit condition, remaining tool life or the quality of the last molded sample. Those points require documents, closer inspection or a trial agreed with the seller.

What to inspect before buying a used injection mold

A useful used injection mold inspection starts with the molded part. If recent samples are available, compare them with the drawing or approved reference and note flash, short shots, sink marks, warpage, burn marks, gate condition and visible ejector marks. A video of the mold running is stronger evidence than an isolated sample, especially when the cycle and ejection sequence can be seen.

The mold itself should be reviewed in a consistent order:

  • Cavity and core surfaces for corrosion, damage, heavy polishing or welding repairs.
  • Parting line and shut-off surfaces for wear that may create flash.
  • Slides, lifters, ejector pins and return mechanisms for free movement.
  • Guide pins, bushings, support pillars and plates for wear or deformation.
  • Cooling connections and channels for leakage, blockage or corrosion.
  • Hot-runner manifold, heaters, thermocouples and connectors where fitted.
  • Sprue, gate and runner condition, including removable inserts.
  • Mold locks, lifting points and loose accessories needed for transport and setup.
  • Maintenance history, repair notes and the most recent production or trial record.
Not every purchase needs a full production trial. The inspection scope should follow the value of the mold, the cost of downtime and the consequences of receiving an unusable tool. For a critical production mold, a trial with the intended resin and measured samples is normally more meaningful than appearance photos alone.

Matching a second-hand mold to the injection molding machine

One of the easiest mistakes is buying a usable mold that does not fit the destination machine. Before an order is confirmed, the buyer and supplier should compare at least:

  • Mold length, width, height and total handling weight.
  • Tie-bar spacing and platen opening.
  • Minimum and maximum mold height.
  • Machine daylight and opening stroke.
  • Clamping arrangement and mounting-hole pattern.
  • Locating-ring diameter and nozzle interface.
  • Ejector layout, stroke and required connection.
  • Required shot size for the actual part, runner and resin.
  • Estimated clamp-force requirement for the projected area and process.
  • Cooling, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical connections.
These checks cannot be replaced by a simple machine-tonnage number. Two injection molding machines with similar clamp force may have different tie-bar spacing, platen arrangements, ejector connections or controller interfaces.

Identifying each packed mold

Two stacked molds in this order were separated by timber and strapped to individual wooden bases. Printed reference images show the plastic products associated with the tooling. Handwritten marks of 419 kg and 127 kg are visible on the wrapping and help the warehouse plan handling.

The figures in the photos are treated as visible handling marks, not independently verified gross weights. Before booking freight or selecting lifting equipment, the final packing list should state whether each figure is net mold weight, packed weight or another internal reference.

Another packed set carries a printed reference for an electrical enclosure and two similar 371 kg markings. The mold halves are closed, wrapped, supported on timber and secured together with steel strapping.

Export packing for heavy used molds

Used molds are dense loads with hard edges and high point loads. Protective film keeps workshop dust and incidental moisture away during handling, but wrapping alone is not a complete export-packing method. The mold needs stable support and restraint that work with its actual weight and center of gravity.

The heavier units in this batch were placed on timber supports and held with steel straps. Visible handling marks include 763 kg and 891 kg on two of the wrapped molds. The supports keep steel surfaces off the floor, create forklift access and help separate one mold from another.

For sea freight, the final method may also include rust preventive, desiccant, moisture-barrier material, edge protection and a suitable export crate or reinforced base. The mold should be secured through structural points without placing damaging loads on connectors, hoses or precision surfaces. Lifting eyes and forklift entry should remain accessible to the warehouse team.

What overseas buyers should send for a used mold inquiry

A request that says only “used mold for plastic chair” is difficult to verify. A more useful inquiry includes:

  • Part drawing, product photos and a physical sample if available.
  • Plastic material, shrinkage rate, color and any additive requirements.
  • Required cavity count and target production volume.
  • Existing injection molding machine brand, model and platen details.
  • Acceptable part quality, tolerance and surface-finish requirements.
  • Preferred runner and gate arrangement.
  • Need for a mold trial, sample measurement or video record.
  • Destination, unloading equipment and packing requirements.
  • Whether repair, refurbishment or spare inserts should be quoted.
When an exact used mold is not available, the same information can be used to compare refurbishment, modification and new-tooling options. Sometimes a higher-priced mold with a clear trial record is the lower-risk purchase.
